Why do peta have a problem with feral cats?

I am right in thinking that feral cats mean household type cats that live in the wild? Why does peta oppse them? They are self sufficient. Fair enough some of them are manky looking with fleas etc but is that not just natural if animals are living rough?
If they say it is because these cats arent fixed would it not be more ethical to "fix" them rather than kill them? are they trying to eradicate that species?
