for instance, how much would it cost to buy solar panels which could power one hypothetical standard american home of two parents and one child?

Question by Amy: Parents, do you start your gardening plants/flowers from seeds or do you buy plants?
If you start them from seeds how long does it take for you to have a “strong” (flowering) plant for your garden? Yes, I know the seed packet will tell you and it depends on the type of plant but, it has been my experience, that the seeds did not “flower” until much later than the packet stated. This could just be me or something I’m doing wrong. I’m getting all my gardening stuff around so that I can start all my own plants this year. Do you have any advice and/or tips?

BQ: Do your children like to help you in the garden? My LO loves it, the 16 y/o not so much.

Both! Tomatoes and green pepper and cucumbers we usually buy plants. Pumpkins I usually keep seeds each year and start them in the house, corn, green beans, squash I usually start from seed in the garden. And my marigolds, I save seeds every year and reseed in the spring!! And my children love to help plant and help pick the produce!!

Question by curouis: I thought of a very temporary solution to me moving out of my parents house in LA.? Is this idea silly?
Even though this is very basic and silly I have thought about setting up a garden shed in my parents backyard that I could put a cott or bed in. This way I could have some privacy and space from my parents. My laptop has wireless internet. Since the wooden garden shed would have electricity I could pug in a electric portable heater.

The shed would have a concrete floor that I could put rugs on.

The only disadvantage to the shed would be no windows inside or restroom inside. I could go inside the restroom inside the house.

I’m not hand enough to install windows. The inside of the shed would have a wood panel wall and a door that is unpainted. To solve the window solution I could paint the inside of the door a color or design that is something nice to look at.

On thing that may bother me is closing the door while inside at night sleeping. I guess I could get over that.
My parents house is located in a very safe area.

The backyard is gated and fenced.

I’m in my late 20s. We don’t have a basement in our house. This garden shed has a locking door and is very hard to break into.

This outside building is also insulated so cold air doesn’t come inside when the door is closed.

Currently I’m out of work with the bad economy. Rents in my area a very very high. Try $ 1500 or more for a one bedroom apartment.

The shed wouldn’t be attached to my parents house. I could still get some privacy.
I could buy this heater for the shed.

I think you are right, this is a silly idea. If your parents aren’t respecting your privacy in the house I can’t see why they would respect your privacy in the backyard. Usually, this is a good time to to school when the economy is bad, try that instead. Also, I can’t imagine what loser kind of girl would be interested in hanging out with you in your “shed”. Yikes.
