Question by isotope2007: Seniors how do you spend your time?
Most of us dont spend all of our time on the computer, or sitting looking out the windows, I walk everyday, to the market, buy fresh produce, walk to the park, the lake, I do a lot of photography, my camera goes everywhere with me, I am constantly learning and studying Mandarin, I love to cook, so make all my meals from scratch. I love to garden, flowers and veggies, so several times a week in season mow my lawn, weed and I love raking leaves. I am once more spending from Sept to July living overseas and teaching/tutoring english and sight seeing etc

Swim as much as possible. I do a lot of my own home renovations, did the kitchen this past summer, built a deck and replaced part of the fence. Do a little work out, exercise routine everyday which includes hand held weights and resistence workout, I read a lot Try to keep up sailing when possible , I dont crew these days, I am just decorative

Art galleries, music in the park, festvals, art in the park, etc

I used to love making jams and jellies but with just me it isnt worth the fuss and mess anymore..

I’m 58. Have a disability and chronic pain condition, so it isnt always easy to keep going, but the alternative of sitting down and quitting isnt acceptable IMO Of course I dont all of this everyday lol

How are all of you spending your time and what have you given up and why?
The younguns seem to think we are pretty idle and redundant so how do you spend your time?
One thing I cannot do is sit at a computer for very long, or sit through a movie, my muscles lock up, go into spasm and I am in a lot of pain
I cant run anymore, or ski either

You obviously aren’t old “Of course I dont all of this everyday lol”
if you were really old you would not have said “lol” or added Additional Details.

Homemade Christmas gifts.?

I am looking for great ideas to give away at Christmas to people in my husbands office. I am a fairly good cook but am looking for some new awesome recipies. In the past I have done cakes, cookies and breads. I have also made canning jars with herbed mozzarella, jams and jellies. I am looking for other unique ideas that you have given that people have loved or recipies that have been favorites when you have shared them. I am looking for something that I will make not a mix I have made for them to finish. Thanks for all your help and recipies.

lifespan of homemade preserves?

I’m looking to make some jams and jellies for Christmas gifts this year, but I have no idea how long this stuff lasts. I’d like to make it ahead of time, but what’s a good life expectancy for this stuff? I’m making strawberry jam, blueberry jam, pear and lime jelly.

Momma’s Outdoor Memories

The old clothes line
now sages to the ground.
the bag that held the pins
now holds a sparrows nest.

The flower beds always neat and trim,
now lay in disarray with weeds all within.
Flowers trying to peek around
the weeds that grow too high.

The pears off that old pear tree
she use to always can
They now lie rotting in the sun
with wasp and bees around.

The freezer that held the food she grew
is almost empty now.
Was filled so full with peas and corn
and peaches, beans and berries.

The wash room off the back of the house
Now full of junk and dirty
Once held her homemade jams and jellies,
canned tomatoes, pears and such.

The old water well that gave us fresh water
many years since filled in.
Now used as a table top in winter to feed the birds
and in summer to hold the flowers.

The front porch facing the road
you would think she would like to sit
but no she always choose that back porch swing
as her favorite place to be.

The old John Deere mower she finally had to give
to my brother
for she could not longer get on and off.
Her hips and knees just were too worn.

The next to go was her car
Like the last of her independence
We hated to see that time come
but it was her decision not ours.

I planted her a tomato plant
this year, like every year
since she has not been able
to do so for herself.

Now I go next door and take care of it.
Is so bittersweet to me.
It brings tears to my eyes
as I pick fruit and think of my sweet momma.

So many go memories of my mom outdoors
the place she loved so dearly
that’s why it’s so hard to go there now
that’s why it be be hard not to.

What do you think purchasing plates that say “farm fresh” on them says about a person’s personality?

These plates say "FARM FRESH" "HOMEMADE" and "JAMS AND JELLIES" around the border. There are also two rows of green checkers and pictures of fruit. Based on nothing but this choice of china pattern, please hazard a totally wild guess about the owner’s personality.

A question about homemade jams and jellies…?

When you make your own homemade jams and jellies, and do it properly, what is the shelf life? How long can you keep them without them spoiling?
I am thinking of making jams and jellies to give as gifts next Christmas using fruits from this coming spring and summer.

Can I send homemade jam from Canada to a friend in the US?
