I am about to move and would like to start organic gardening. Any tips on composting, making beds, watering, planting times and tips? I have a dog too and am not sure how she’ll act. And i’m pretty cheap(read-broke)

Best answer:

Answer by chicagocheryl2008
I would suggest the first thing you do is read all you can on square foot gardening. You can get the book “The New Square Foot Garden” by Mel Bartholomew at your public library.

Also, look up information on the EarthBox growing system. They are self-watering containers that enable you to grow lots of produce (I’ve seen a picture of a very large tree growing in one) in a confined space. There are also knock-offs that you can build yourself with comparable results.

I would also suggest you read all you can on the internet about composting. The best time to start composting is yesterday ;o). I’ve always bought bags of compost from the store, but there’s a great amount of satisfaction you get from doing it yourself.

I don’t know how much space you’re working with, but if you have a relatively large amount of space, I would suggest you grow your own seedlings. The biggest investment you’d have to make would be buying a florescent light fixture and a rack to put your plants on. You’ll save big bucks over buying a lot of plants from the garden center. You will need to research planting times for your area. The biggest mistake people make (me included) is getting too excited and starting their plants too early.

One last comment. Check out the Gardenweb website. It’s a wonderful community of knowledgeable folks who are glad to answer whatever questions you have.

Good luck.

Gardens usually are wonderful because they enhance the visual appeal of a home and can provide nutritional produce for you and your family if you choose to grow vegetables. Is gardening best for you, and are you ready to put in the time to succeed? Considering the variety of things keeping us occupied these days, do you have time to plant and maintain a garden? It needs to be something you want to do, and are prepared to spend the time to make it work out right.

In the event you spend your time cultivating a garden in the bare space in your back yard or should you build a basketball court for your children? Then again, it’s possible a backyard storage building or a hot tub might fit the bill better in your situation. Your final decision will be the one that resonates the most with your family. The aim of a garden would be to improve your life with pretty flowers or edible produce that may help you eat more healthily. Even though gardening may be somewhat time consuming, for some people it is actually a wonderful way to relax and get rid of stress. It might even resurrect childhood memories of making mud pies.

When you’re considering the pros and cons of starting your own garden, don’t forget that flowers are very meaningful to large numbers of people. Blooms are welcome in every situation, whether it’s for a specific party or just a way to show a loved one that you appreciate them. They can easily beautify any table and add a whole new look to the outside of your home. Your average patio could possibly transform into a thing of beauty with the color of flowers, in potted plants or a bed garden. Whenever you harmonize the colors of your blooms with your patio furniture, it will be a place you love to go to relax and have beautiful thoughts. Whenever your friends and relations admire your garden, you’ll feel proud that you put so much work into it.

Lots of people notice that working in a garden calms them while others consider it to be a very disappointing task. A number of people realize that gardening is an absolute chore and it can take a while for them to get used to doing it right. Just as it is with other things in your daily life, gardening might not necessarily work properly initially, but don’t give up. Gardening usually takes a lot of time, and it’s not for all, but the time spent can be worth it. Consider the benefits you receive when you work on other hobbies that you have. Gardening can be the same way, once you realize what you will get out of it. No doubt you’re going to consider it a big time waster and an unenjoyable use of your time if you can’t realize the value of it.

Gardening is usually just about anything you want to make it. It could be a source of beauty in your home and maybe a source of food for you and your loved ones. It is an excellent method of creating constructive self esteem through the process of creating beauty.

An outdoor garden could really allow us be more calm. It would likely a lot more calming and encouraging if designed with proper lighting, and solar LED lighting are best best for this kind of garden concept.

Good luck.

Question by noworries898: What’s an easy way to start growing my own herbs and veggies?

Good luck.
