Question by Fast Reg: How do I attract birds into my garden?
Just before Christmas I put out a nut feeder in my back garden to help the poor little critters through the winter and to give us some interest and enjoyment. We normally get sparrows, tits and finches coming through anyway and taking advantage of the thick privet hedge around our garden. However, the feeder has now been out there for about 3 weeks and shows no sign that it has been visited.

Now I know that birds don’t have a mental image of a bird feeder and spend their day flying around looking for something that matches this image. So how do birds discover feeders when they are put out? What can I do to attract our local bird population to ours?
Oops!! It seems that Yahoo! Answers is a bit prudish. Those asterisks replace the name of a family of small birds whose members include Blue, Great and Long Tailed. I think you can see what it did there. ;o)

my grandma would place cooked rice in the field and mostly birds would come and poop all over the place.

A Scooby Style Mystery Involving A Few Funny Christmas T-Shirts

Who steals funny Christmas t-shirts, anyway? I mean, it would have to take a despicable human being to break into someone’s garage and steal three boxes of holiday shirts that my family have been collecting for the past three years, right? Well, that’s what I thought at first when I went into my garage and found the outside door slightly ajar, boxes thrown everywhere, and three boxes of our clothes missing.

The first thing I felt when I discovered the theft was complete outrage. We live in a gated community, after all, so who in our neighborhood would want to steal a few boxes of funny Christmas t-shirts? The absolute gall of people! No one that lives here is financially unable to get their own holiday clothes for portraits and greeting cards. It had to be an act of malicious spitefulness. Someone in our community wanted to upset me, and they certainly succeeded.

I was so worked up by lunchtime, that I was fully prepared to got around town and hunt for clues as to where my funny Christmas t-shirts were and who took them. My wife is an eternal voice of reason, and she reminded me that we actually have to live next to most of these people and that interrogating the neighbors probably wasn’t a great idea. As I simmered down and lowered my escalating heart-rate…I started putting two-and-two together. How would a neighbor know exactly where to look for these shirts, anyway? This was an inside job…and it was time to find answers.

The kids are getting older, and what most likely happened is one (or all) of them got tired of being dressed up in funny Christmas t-shirts every holiday for pictures. They were losing their Christmas spirit and getting embarrassed of our family traditions. They should have talked to me first. Well, they were certainly going to talk to me now. I took them and sat them down, giving them my meanest glare as I took away their privileges one by one until I got a confession. No one even blinked. They said not a word, and shuffled off to bed when I was done. I went to bed angry while the snow piled high outside.

The next day didn’t unfold anything like I thought it would. I woke up and went downstairs, my head full of ways that I would get a confession from the kids. Something caught my eyes outside, and I looked out of my front door. All three of my dear kids were out there, working on a final snowman. Each one of these snowmen had funny Christmas t-shirts on…the exact ones that were “stolen” from the garage! I felt bad for thinking that my kids had lost the Christmas spirit, because here they were doing something amazing, just because they knew it would make me happy! The only crime they had actually committed was the crime of loving their family too much, and for that…I definitely forgive them.
