Question by drissy29: How can I keep my cats from using my vegetable garden as a litter box??
It’s a boxed in area..actually there are two. I just took 2 wheelbarrels full of cat poop out and am now ready to plant my vegetable garden.

Someone suggested wet newspaper surrounding each plant..but my cats are pretty smart. They might just think I’ve provided them something to read while they do their business.

I’m leaning more towards some kind of chicken wire structure that has a removable top to allow for the plant growth.

Any detailed instructions would be greatly appreciated

Best answer:

Answer by cuddles
moth balls work great

But a recent problem is when she’s outside (she loves to explore around our land) she’s been digging up my gardens especially newly planted seeds.

Is this a common problem? How can she and I work together to stop this from happening? Any help would be appreciated!

Best answer:

Answer by white tigeress
Giving a section of the yard where she can do this, box it off and put one of her toys in the dirt. to keep her from other area you may want to put down chicken wire under the dirt these grates on their nails and deters them from digging there. you can try those sprays like SCAT AWAY but I personally haven’t had any luck with those.

Question by Sara D: When is the best time to start planting in MASS.?
I recently just moved into a house with lots of property, I would like to start a garden filled with MANY things! Iv never planted anything before! I would like to know some good recommendations for things to plant whether its vegetables flowers treas fruits and also where is a good place to start the garden? Do i need to buy new soil? Put up a fence? Do i need to buy fertillizer? I am very clueless to everything in this subject. Also if there is any good book on gardening for beginners that i can purchase to help guide me in the process? Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Yarcofin
I wouldn’t start with trees… they take a long time to grow. It can be 10 or 15 years before you get fruit off of them. Start with some easy vegetables like potatoes, tomatos, cucumbers, etc. I would recommend radishes because they are easy to grow and they grow really fast… you can get 4 or 5 crops in before winter easily. Go to a store that sells seeds and see what they have… plant whatever you enjoy eating, that’s the most important thing. Plant them a few weeks after the last frost in spring. April is probably a safe bet.

Soil and Fertilizer – If you don’t already have a garden or the soil is poor quality, you will probably want to buy some soil or manure. Don’t buy it in bags from stores… you can usually get it delivered by the truckload for a lot cheaper. Once you start your garden also set up a composter or two. Not only are you helping the environment and recycling, it also makes great new soil for your garden year after year.

Fences will help keep out wild animals if you don’t live in the city. In the city if it is in your yard you don’t really need another fence around it. For berries you will probably need to put chicken wire around them to keep birds from eating all of them.

There are lots of good books on the subject but you should be also able to find information on the internet for free. There are lots of amateur gardeners on the internet sharing information. Just search for each plant you want to grow and you will find all kinds of growing information.

Learn how to use and get a good set of garden equipment…. hoe, spade, rake, etc. Especially if you are going to have a huge garden it will make your job a lot easier with the right kind of tools.

Put your garden where it gets lots of morning light. Make sure you don’t put your garden so that it’s always in the shade of your house or other structures, or the plants won’t do well at all.

If you notice that some of your neighbours have gardens, ask them for help and I’m sure they would be glad to give you some tips, especially if you offer to help them do some work on their own garden in the spring. Then they can show you how to do things the right way, and they will be glad to not have to do it themselves.

Question by ed g: Ideas about making an opening in a chicken wire fence?
I have enclosed 3 sides of a vegetable garden.with chicken wire hooked to metal fence posts. On the 4th side, I’d like to have a walk through to push the wheel barrow through. I could pour cement and sink posts and make a gate with hinges, but I’m looking for a simpler and less costly way to have a walk through. I buried about 3 inches of chicken wire all the way around, so the rabbits shouldn’t be able to dig under whatever opening I make. Ideas for the an opening on the 4th side? A link to a picture or to a “how to” site would be great if you have one. Thanks a lot.

We have an animal getting into the garden at night and eating the green beans. It eats ONLY green beans, biting off the beans with a clean, straight cut like a rabbit. However, it’s eating beans off the TOP of the plants (a height of 12-24 inches), and leaving the usual rabbit-favorites untouched. Moreover, it bites off green bean leaves at the stem, but doesn’t eat them.
The garden is enclosed by 3 ft chicken-wire fence. There’s no evidence of holes, burrows, or bent wire. This morning, we found flattened plants, as though a raccoon-sized animal had leapt into the garden. That animal left a pile of fecal matter (small & round) similar to what a rabbit leaves. However, it also left a few tracks, which are obviously NOT rabbit tracks. (I’ve raised rabbits for 20 yrs; I know rabbit tracks.) The tracks are round, with at least 4 distinct “toe” prints, and claw indentations. They look similar to a skunk or weasel’s tracks. We’re utterly baffled as to what this animal could be. I don’t know of a medium-sized animal that leaves a round print and a pile behind it, and eats ONLY green beans from a garden.
If you have any idea what this could be PLEASE let me know!

Hey every1, lately the food prices have been soaring ridiculously so i’ve decided to take matters into my own hands. My gandma owns a large farm not to far from me so im going to set up a huge fenced in garden. I have two questions.
What fruits/vegetables should i plant first to get a quick harvest as soon as possible?
And do you guys have any tips on keeping rabbits or any animal for that matter out of the garden (from digging under the fence). All i have is ALOT of wood and plenty of chicken wire.
Any tips or suggestions would be great. Thanks =).

Best answer:

Answer by K B
Dig the fence posts deep and bury the chicken wire as far as you can below the ground to help stop them burrowing out. It won’t stop them completely – burrowing is what rabbits are built for – but it might slow them down a bit.
