I know a little about cooking with spirits and make wonderful desserts. But…?

a lot of recipes say to use your favorite wine/spirits/liquer or beer to cook with— and that just doesn’t tell me anything. All I know about mixed drinks is that I prefer the kind that doesn’t burn your throat when you drink it. And I have been told that only ppl. who like to drink use spirits in cooking. All I can say is that they really jazz up my desserts !! I don’t want to waste my money buying spirits that I know nothing about just b/c a recipe calls for blah, blah, blah. I love to cook for myself; I live alone and my meals are a high point of my day. I love my food to have good flavor and be tasty, not bland. Any suggestions…???
Other than the usual "You just have to experiment to find what appeals to you… "
The ppl. at the liquor usually don’t know how to advise me; I live in a rural area. And what ever I ask for the recipe calls for, they almost never have it.
