How do I make sure that my garden plot is safe to plant my broccoli?

I had yellow squash growing in my garden and the plants died from mildew and worms.I want to plant my broccoli in the same place.Is there a way to make sure that my broccoli plants won’t be infected from the diseases that killed my squash plants?Any advice is appreciated.Thank you.
