One of the more unique and picturesque hostels in the world today is the Hostel in the Forest. For 32 years, The Hostel in the Forest has been operating about 2 miles from H.W. 95 in Brunswick, Georgia. Started by Tom Dennard, The Hostel in the Forest opened its doors on the 4th of July, 1975. The Hostel in the Forest prides itself on being as close to nature as possible without the materialistic and toxic trappings of the outside world. World famous for their geodesic dome and tree houses which serve as accommodation, The Hostel in the Forest follows a strict protocol when it comes to maintaining the calm and serenity of their dwellings.
The Hostel in the Forest was built and has been sustained ever since by the eager and loving hands of volunteers. While it was part of the International Youth Hostel Association till the mid-nineties, the management was unable to meet the liability insurance requirements and hence had to go private. However this disaffiliation did not reduce the popularity of this hidden away getaway where people come to relax and unwind.
The Hostel in the Forest describes itself as a spiritual retreat center and educational facility without promoting any religion, denomination, cult etc. The only thing promoted is nature and peace. Accordingly, The Hostel in the Forest offers various retreats and workshops focussing on ecological science, organic gardening, yoga, meditation and Tai Chi.
Apart from this, there is no central heating and air conditioning or even private baths or anything that is luxurious. What The Hostel in the Forest does offer is a bed in a safe set up with a roof over your head, outdoor showers and screens to protect from the insects.
In the day time you can spend a leisurely afternoon walking the trails, swimming in the pool, canoeing around the lake or even chatting with other guests. A lot of guests have got in touch with their artistic selves in such tranquillity and expressed themselves through music, crafts, writings, creating buildings, organic gardening etc.
The Hostel in the Forest takes reservations, cancellations or confirmations only by phone and not email. They also need a reconfirmation before you arrive there along with the time you would be getting there. The Hostel in the Forest also doesn’t make reservations more than a month in advance and there is a maximum limit of 3 days unless otherwise approved.
In order to maintain the peace of the natural surroundings, groups with a maximum of 5 people are allowed and the charges are $25 per person per night. Payment is done in cash or travellers checks only.
The Hostel in the Forest also suggests you get a flashlight to make moving around in the dark easier. Mosquito repellent is also a good idea. While The Hostel in the Forest has a communal organic vegetarian dinner, they suggest you carry food for breakfast, lunch and snacks and drinks.
