For everyday hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hoes, etc., you can't go wrong with Bully Tools. Home Depot sells them as well as many local hardware stores. They are made in the USA and are high quality. Here's a link to find them near you:

You could try to lean away from the easy option of photos of people cooking and things like that and instead go for something abstract, using reflections in shiny utensils and so on. This will show that you are able to thing outside the normal views of things and use photography to look at the world in a different way.

Both True Value, and Ace Hardware store brands make a decent hand tool. For power tools Honda lawnmowers, Echo weed whackers& hedge trimmers,Sthil chainsaws. John Deer makes my favorite riding mower or lawn tractor.

You're right, that does sound boring. But you can add a few different situations to spice it up a little.

Let's use a serving spoon as an example - you could include shots of it lying in the drawer, a hand digging it out, placed neatly on the set table(all shiny and clean), in use inside the dish, in use over somebody's plate, lying with the last few crumbs of food in the dish (all messy this time), being carried back into the kitchen, sitting in the dishwasher (put the camera inside the dishwasher and shoot OUT via self timer/remote), being taken out of the dishwasher, put back in the drawer.

It may be the same old spoon, but the situations sure would be varied.

One option that is perfect for a balcony are the hanging tomato garden bags. These bags simply hang in an area where light is abundant. The soil stays very moist and the bag must be moisturized heavily before use for the best results. You, of course, need to water them often; however, other than watering, these bags are basically carefree and almost fool proof.

Another great option would be to grow Earl's Faux tomatoes. These tend to grow well in a planter environment and are excellent for the weather conditions in Northern Indiana.

For either of these options, the tomatoes can be planted in May as long as the risk of frost has passed.

As far as the longer tools go. Fiberglass handles with cushioned grips will last longer and make your day better.
