I need a checklist of basic tools and supplies and if you know the easiest vegetables to grow in an organic garden…thanks iin adavence

Best answer:

Answer by fluffernut
Hopi Indians used a stick but I think you’ll need more than that.

Shovel or spade for turning the soil. A steed rake for breaking up soil clods and leveling the soil. A trowel for digging holes for planting already established plants. Seeds can usually be hand set. Gloves to protect your hands. Markers to show where and what you have planted. Watering method(s) your choice: hose, watering cans, sprinkler head or drip system. Hoe of some type to manage the weeds. Then plant specific support systems such as for pole peas and beans, tomato supports.

Easiest: radishes, bush beans, pole beans, summer squash unless the squash bugs find you. Carrot seed is pretty fine and tricky to plant. Beets are better. Turnips if you eat them. Corn is easy but you need multiple rows …….plant in blocks of plants, for pollination.

What are you using for fertilizer or soil ammendment. You need to prepare the soil first with compost before planting. Since you are going organic, then you’ll need to supplement with organic fertilizers such as seaweed meal, blood mean, bone meal, cottonseed meal or whatever is available in your area.

Mainly you need more research than what you will get here. Find some info from Rodale Press………they are the grandparents of organic gardening. Check your library.

Question by millylouise: How do you plan and grow an organic vegetable and herb garden?
I want to have my very own organic vegetable and herb garden for my family and my consumption. Please share with me how to do so. Thank you in advance.

Best answer:

Answer by Lola
1) Choose your site. You’ll want it to have as mush full sun as possible, you also will want it semi-private (less tomato thieves), and far from a septic tank if you have one. How you prepare the site has a lot to do with your region. If you are in the midwest or northern us, you might want to use the smother technique. That is put a heavy layer of newspaper, and leaves on the area, and let them rot down the sod. If you get a tiller on sale, you might want to break ground now.

2) Prepare a compost area. If you don’t use chemicals on your lawn, and bag your grass this can create valuable compost for your garden. Also getting rid of veggie waste from the kitchen rather than putting it in a landfill is great!

3) Look for seeds/Start considering what to plant. Right now you could put in a set of winter garlic, or strawberrie plants.

4) Read a book or two on gardening. The easiest way to organic is simply skipping chemicals, there are beneficial plant theories that suggest surrounding your garden with marigolds to deter some pests. For herbs it is important to know your zone, so you’ll know what will be perennial.

5) Only plant mints in pots!

Answer by colmenar
The only way is persistent weeding out, I always grow mint in a bucket now. I love it but not as much as it loves my garden and yours by the sound of it.

Answer by talkenwithmyself
well, i don’t know how to get rid of the “worm”… but a moth like insect is what lays them, instead of trying to get rid of the worms try to get rid of the moth … i heard that if you get one of those ant things (makes a ringing sound) the moths can’t stand it, and they won’t come near it … of course, mine would be inside-ish … so try to do it, if you can’t maybe just get that powder stuff that. just just the tomatoes before you eat them …

We are making a veggie garden and we have applied fertilizer but we are wondering when it says to give plants plenty of organic matter would old leaves around the yard be considered organic matter? They are all old and pretty much decayed so should we till them into the ground and would they help our garden. (P.S. I hope this is not a stupid question but as people say the only stupid question is the one you do not ask!) Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by geoff28791
Yes, leaves are organic matter.
better yet, start a compost with same manure and use your kitchen scraps. Stir it up every couple of weeks. when the food scraps are no longer recognizable, stir that into the soil or spread it on top.
You can get a small bag of manure at a garden shop. It’s not as gross as it sounds.

is there any natural way to remove them? will they harm my plants?

Best answer:

Answer by Cat
Yes, they can harm your plants. Mostly, they’ll just make the leaves look eaten and ratty, but won’t kill the plants outright.

You can knock them off your plants into a pan of soapy water. You can also spray the plants they like with insecticidal soap with NEEM oil in it. It won’t kill them, but they don’t seem to like it, and will move on rather than stay and feed on plants that are sprayed.

You could also place bait bags far from your desired plants. Though there is some discussion whether those don’t actually attract even MORE beetles into your yard than would be there anyway.

What do you think? Answer below!

Question by double z: Iron oxide and organic garden?
I was cutting some steel poles in my backyard. Now there is a lot of rusted iron oxide lying on top of the dirt. Is this bad? I am planning on planting vegetables there and eating them. Is the iron oxide rust bad? I can remove it right now, before I plant, if it isn’t a good idea to leave it there.
So it is not dangerous. Thanks Rocky.

Best answer:

Answer by rocky
There’s a folklore legend that it helps to bury a rusty nail next to anything planted in limey (or alkaline) soil in order to help lower the ph and make the soil more acid. I don’t know if this technique works, but I believe it does makes the point that rust will not harm your vegetables (or harm YOU when you eat them!) Of course, if the amount of rust is really excessive, it wouldn’t hurt to scrape some of it off the top and discard it. But any remaining deposits will not be dangerous.
