First, you must consider location. You must be able to build a chicken coop in an elevated, well-ventilated area, free from moisture and will certainly dry fast in the event of rain. Have this chicken coop face the direction of the sun. Also, secure your chickens from further harm by installing a chicken wire outside the coop area at a depth of 1 foot.

The posts supporting the mesh are outfitted with caster wheels or a similar contraption at the bottom to facilitate its easy transfer from one area to another. For backyard chickens, chicken pens in wheels certainly are a sensible alternative for holding the flock contained in the acceptable amount of space with out them acquiring into difficulties.

If you have ever had a mature flock before, you would have found out that chickens love to dig up plants and would at times, even eat the leaves off certain plants. If you or your neighbor has a landscaped garden, a flock that is left loose will soon make significant damage. In addition, certain predators such as racoons, cats, and unattended dogs could do away with backyard chickens that are left unprotected to roam in the yard. Others might prefer a chicken pen with a roost or a coop attached, so that the flock can stay within the pen during the day, then simply go up to the coop at night, where they are safe from predators.

Because chicken pens on wheels could be moved from 1 region to a further, it’s a straightforward make a difference to transfer the chicken pen exactly where they relaxed. Just make sure which you allocate enough space for every chicken confined; when chickens are housed in spaces which can be too modest, it tends to result in fighting, cannibalism and egg eating.

An abscess forms in the sole of the foot of the chicken and frequently can be overlooked as bumble foot because it can look much like calluses. It’s going to be swollen and usually hard tissues build up. Then the bird starts to limp and in more major cases there’ll be blood in the chickens footprint. Bumble foot in chicken can deform the feet seriously but when detected early, treatment is pretty straightforward.

The Causes

Hen House Perches – Bumble feet starts with a bruise on the foot that later progresses to little injuries that get infected. These are due to the habit of chickens perching anywhere and everywhere they fancy. Perching on very narrow wires, living in a chicken house and run where the floor is made from wire and perching on narrow edges and pointed corners all cause bumble feet. Another common cause is jumping from a perch that is too high and landing hard.

Improper Nutrition – Bumble feet is also sure to occur when there’s insufficient Vitamin A in the system. Seeds, a chicken favorite is low in vitamin A. The vitamin promotes resistance to bug infection and also promoting digestion and appetite. An obvious sign the chicken lacks vitamin A is when the plumage loses its common luster, becomes pale and appears rough. There is also the lack of colour intensity in the cere and there is yellowish and scaly accumulation on the beak.

Contagions – The little injuries and lacerations on the undersides of the feet is a good breeding zone for parasites and bacteria that when left untreated will eat through to the bone, become acutely painful and even endanger the life of the chicken.

Prevention

Provide good perching areas in the coop and replace the chicken run if the floor is made from wire. If at all possible, have perches in the hen house with several different diameters so your hens have the choice to find a perch they’re more comfy on.

Chicken will eat just about anything and so they respond well to vitamin A supplementation. Provide food that’s rich in Vitamin A. Carrot for one is an excellent source the chicken likes. Greens are also good for the vitamin and so are potatoes. Add vegetable and fruit peel to their diet as chicken loves this. It has been shown time and time again that once the vitamin deficiency is resolved, bumble feet heals.

Treatment

Antibiotics will be needed to cure bumble foot once it has set in. When the infection isn’t serious the technique is to clean the feet first in slightly warmed water for ten minutes before applying the lotion or the antibiotic.

If the bumble feet is more serious, soak the feet in warmed water for ten minutes and then employing a sharp knife take away the scabs and the puss until you are left with a nice clean hole, apply the cream or the antibiotic, bandage the foot or employ a vet rap and repeat the method every day until the bumble foot is healed.

Before starting building, it’s a smart move to sketch out your design on a bit of paper. A little imagination can help , but if you are not the inventive type, you will find some ideas by having a look at these professionally built home chicken coops.

When you are ready to install the coop, make sure that it is set up in a way which will make cleaning and disinfecting more efficient. For example, a floor that’s slightly sloped down toward the door can make it simpler for water to flow outside when you hose down the coop.

If built correctly, the chicken coop should be very good in guarding your chickens from outside elements. A coop should be safe from cold drafts but also well ventilated. Too much moisture can cause ammonia to accumulate within the shelter and cause sicknesses. The general guideline is to set up the door in a way that it opens inwards, so the air can readily enter the shelter. Another method is to position the coop in an area where it faces the sun. This allows the sun’s heat to dry the ground and stop too much moisture.

Having proper insulation installed round the walls can also help the chickens warm in winter and cool during summer, as well as keep them dry. This minimizes the chances of your chickens from getting sick. This is most important when the chickens you are raising are specifically intended for egg production.

The right way to keep your chickens safe from predators is to enclose the shelter with strong chicken wire. Even the doors and windows ought to have a screening system for double protection. In the case of predators that burrow or dig under the ground, burying chicken wire round the coop at least one foot below the soil should be in a position to prevent entry.

The water and food bowls should have their own spots in the coop that are easily accessed for both you and the chickens. Bear in mind that chickens love to scratch with their feet, which can create quite a mess on the coop’s surface. To prevent this set up the feed and water bowls at neck height. And do not forget to change the water and food at least once a day.

There are still ways to build on the living arrangements of your poultry, but following what has been suggested on this article should point you in the correct direction.

There are many reasons to keep chickens, for eggs, as pets or for meat. If you don’t like the idea of building your own chicken coop visit cages for critters.

A chicken coop keeps chicken safe from predators, gives them shelter at night and in extreme weather and also give them a place to nest which is important for egg-laying chicken. Step one for building a hen coop is getting chicken coop plans.

This is easily solved by getting free internet plans which should have some basics. A coop should be placed on the upper rather than lower end of a slope so that water does not collect around it. When it comes to size, each chicken needs four to six feet of its own space with two extra feet allowed for nesting hens.

Wood is mostly used to make the place for hens, although almost any kind of material can be used. You can also use scrap lumber, convert an old shed or camping trailer. New lumber may be expensive and it is not absolutely necessary. You can reuse glass for the windows too.

Ensure that the plan you pick has a window and door and the windows face southward. This is to provide ventilation more so in warm months and enough sunlight in colder and darker seasons. The plan should also have a nesting area and provide from six to 10 inches for every hen to perch.

The floor is a big deal because of the droppings. One option is to have a hen wire floor with a container underneath to collect droppings. You can also use the deep litter method where four to eight inches of wood pellets, sawdust or wood shavings are placed on the floor. The droppings are stirred to the top into the bedding below. Decomposition will begin and the bedding will start reducing at which point more is added. Then the coop has to be emptied and cleaned out just once or twice a year and you will have some compost for the garden.

When it comes to construction, the frame goes up first followed by the sides and then the roof. Slope the roof a little so water never gathers on it. See also that the doors and windows are secured using hen wire. Put latches on the door and then put in the nest boxes and perches.

Next, the feeding bowels and watering should go in. Place them such that they are at the same level as the chickens backs. Hens tend to scratch a lot and they will scratch against them but away from the water and food to avoid contamination.

You may have a different idea such as a movable place. These are also called chicken tractors. No floor is placed on them and they are easily moved from spot to spot which ensures no part of the lawn gets flattened. This is also a good solution for urban dwellers where space is tight. For the lawn, there is the benefit of free and frequent fertilizing and for you, the need to clean up droppings is eliminated. Whatever plan you have exactly, you can find chicken coop plans on the internet and at no cost.

There are a lot of places to get that chicken coo plans but ours are really easy to comprehend. We can tell you how to build a chicken coop the correct way.

In fact, raising chickens for pets pay off in the long run as they are a source of fresh meat and eggs unlike what you normally buy in the supermarket.

Organic, organic, organic – it’s all you seem to hear about. With your own backyard chickens it is very easy to produce your own organic eggs and poultry meat – all you have to do is feed your chickens organic chicken feed (which you can find easily). The best news? Organically fed chicken that roam freely, eat grass are proven to lay eggs that have higher levels of Omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin E while having lower cholesterol content!

Chickens Have Personalities Too – Did you know that? It’s true – each chicken has their own distinctive and endearing personality traits. Aside from this, chickens are very pleasing to look at because their assortment of colors and patterns; they also come in all sizes and shapes. You will certainly be tempted to over-spoil them, pick them up and hug them to show them off to your friends and give them their individual names as you get familiarized with their characteristics.

Chicken Raising Contributes to Environmental Care

Hens love being able to freely go on the range. By letting them range freely, you get 2 very tangible benefits in return – they would gladly eat any garden bug they see and help you with your lawn mowing. They love to eat grass as well. As an added bonus, they’ll turn all make fertilizer! All you have to do is sit down on the porch and watch them as they happily go about their daily routine.

Most people are not aware that chickens can eat almost anything people can, even leftover foods. Although you may reconsider feeding them onions and garlic as they would make their eggs taste funny.

Chickens are the best producers of black gold soil their waste is a naturally nitrogen-rich. Chickens also thrive on leaves, weeds and grass clippings – they actually help people get rid of their garden/farm refuse instead of simply getting rid of them.

Chickens are Low-Maintenance Pets

Chickens need little maintenance. All you have to do is make sure their food and water containers are freshly filled on a daily basis. And once they start laying eggs, then you have to get the eggs daily as well. Cleaning their coops daily or every other day is good enough and their beddings have to be changed once every couple weeks depending on weather conditions.

I live in the UK and want to get 3 chickens. I have to build a chicken coop. I want it to be quite big so that i could keep about 5 chickens in so my chickens have lots of room. It needs to cost around £50. The chickens will be about medium size. They will be all hens no roosters.

Thanks. Sam B

Best answer:

Answer by stonefieldhill
Do a google search for “chicken tractor”. There are some simple and ingenious ideas for small, mobile housing for your coop. For 5 birds, the coop itself does not have to be very big, but they will need a yard to scratch and socialize in.

If you are trying to keep expenses down, look for recycled material. PVC piping makes great, lightweight framing material to stretch chicken wire over. Get some old pallets if you want to build the coop out of wood (BTW, I have a friend who has taught me that you can construct anything out of old pallets – including barn stalls!)

You might even consider free ranging and just having a coop to secure them in at night. I let our entire flock free range, and they’re terrific at eliminating bugs in the garden. You can clip wings to keep them from roosting in trees at night (or you can get breeds that are flightless, like silkies).
