Question by JaimieS: What’s the best method to remove grass and weeds from this garden plot?
I have a garden plot and it is full of little bitty grass shoots and leftover huge dandelion roots that are now sprouting up after I planted my seedlings. They went through and dug it all up before assigning the plots and they turned the soil, but all of the weed roots must have been in there and just re-sprouted. If I just hoe it, all the roots will re-sprout again but I don’t have time to pull itty bitty weeds one by one – it’s a 25 ft plot and now I can hardly see my seedings among the horrible weeds that didn’t even show when I started! Is there some kind of organic spray that will kill off the weeds and leave my plants intact? What do you think I should do?

Best answer:

Answer by Amber Dawn
I feel for your plight because I’m dealing with an acre of the same problem! Mulch, mulch, mulch! You won’t find a natural herbicide that is safe to use around your seedlings/plants and most of them only kill the foliage and not the root. You can mulch with cardboard, wood chips, dried lawn clippings/hay, straw or even dried leaves. You could also lay down plastic, cutting large holes for you plants. If you decide to you use plastic, be sure to remove it before you cook the roots of your plants – it can get very hot! Cucumber plants also discourage the growth of weeds and grass. Pretty cool!

Question by Miditron: Is it possible to lower the ph of one corner of a garden plot, vs. the whole thing? (growing blueberries)?
I have a garden plot in my front yard in which I’m growing a variety of vegetables and herbs. The average soil ph is about 6.5, which is too far alkaline to properly grow blueberries. Is it possible for me to lower the ph (using sulfur, etc) of just one corner of the garden (say, 2 sq ft) without affecting the entire rest of the plot? Will I need to use some sort of in-ground divider? Or really, will blueberries grow just fine in a ph between 6 and 6.5 and just not produce as much? This is only for a home garden, so I’m not concern with really high yield.

Best answer:

Answer by brian
if should be just fine

I am trying to convert an area of lawn into a garden plot, and I found tilling by hand really difficult. I use a shovel to till, but the shovel can penetrate only as much (only a little deeper than the surface), and the soil structure with grasses growing in it remains intact even after repeated shovel penetration from different directions. It takes a long time just to remove a surface chunk of soil, and the effort was not systematic with patches of grasses still remain here and there.

So what is the most efficient way to till a garden by hand? Do I really need to use a machine? Thanks.

Question by Monte: Fall prepping a garden plot?
I’ve been thinking about starting a small garden next spring. So I was thinking I should get a jump start on it by getting rid of the lawn now. Do I till now? Do I till up the existing grass? Do I remove the grass or kill it? What’s the best way to kill it? Should I just wait until spring?

Best answer:

Answer by K’s Repair (I do it my way)
You can use a sod cutter to cut up the area of lawn you wish to remove and start to add compost and enrich the soil. This will depend partially on where you live. I am in Florida so I can spend all winter making my soil better.

She has p feet of fencing, which will extend along three sides of the garden, with the wall forming the fourth side. What expression in terms of p would maximize the possible area, in square feet of Claire’s garden.

a) 2p^2

b) (p^2)/2

c) (p^2)/4

d) (p^2)/8

Please explain/show answer.

Best answer:

Answer by Knightmaar
So we’re building a garden using an already made wall and adding 3 borders using some fence. We’ll assume that the ready-made wall is infinite so we can use as much as we want.

Let’s call the ready-made wall the “bottom” of the garden.

Let’s define the side of the garden perpendicular to the wall as having length ‘x’.
We have two sides of length ‘x’ (call them left and right).
That means the “top” wall has length p-2x.

Area = x(p-2x) = xp – 2x^2
Area’ = p – 4x

The maximum will be located where Area’ = 0
p-4x = 0
x = p * 1/4

Area” = -4 (so we know it’s a maximum)

So the maximum area is
Area(p * 1/4) = (p * 1/4)p – 2 (p*1/4)^2
= p^2/4 – 2(p^2/16)
= p^2/4 – p^2/8
= p^2/8

What do you think? Answer below!

Question by disoneguy300: Bought a garden plot from an organization on campus, and need to know how to start a flourishing garden?
I just bought a small plot of land (10×20), and it is just basically some fairly wild terrain full of tall grasses (safely assume they are weeds), and some dirt. I would love a step-by-step and/or websites to help me get on track to really start plotting the land and garden successfully. I figure this is the time to really get started, and I would love some help to get me there, whether it is about creating irrigation things ( I don’t even know that).

I am a college student in Davis, CA (fairly warm at this time of the year, and even hotter in the summer…but very cold weather in the winter around the 50s). I have no gardening experience, and merely just a passion to create life and maintain it. Without requiring a female to do so.

Best answer:

Answer by John J
Google “Square Foot Garden” You will get a plethora of information including step by step.

It is organic in its approach.
