The 80’s new wave music was indeed a very important decade in the history of music. This was the decade when the very first indie charts was compiled both in United Kingdom and in the United States.
Fat chick in body hugging tight leather was among the dominant one in the list of Sonic Youth which was considered the culprit of the down fall of indie music. Fans might have decided that any kind of success was really not a bad thing to the whole music movement in general. However, what remains constant in the watchful eye of record labels, which are always in the look out and earnestly exploring the underground scene which they referred to as 80’s new wave music.
During the early stage of the 80s, a lot have witnessed the unity that binds indie artist in the United Kingdom and the United States. This means that the creation of certain charts for any record label even for just a small scale was considered independent as 80’s new wave music.
Various indie labels were born during this decade which later achieved notoriety in 1990s. This includes Sarah Records which started in 1987 and the Sub Pop in the year 1980. the founders of the Sub Pop, Jonathan Poneman and Bruce Pavitt were actually against the indie music and everything that it stands for, but later finding themselves promoting artist who popularize this 80’s new wave music.
This may considered to be a factor to which indie fans should take a closer look in setting their criteria for the band of their choice in the 80’s new wave music. When certain music is not being appreciated by the people then certainly that is a total junk and it should no longer exist.
Founders of 80’s new wave music and sub pop have truly embodied that notion when they promoted Sound garden and the very famous Nirvana. The labels even spawn a movement which they call Singles Club which extends to the glitzy world of Hollywood.
Both in US and UK, the 80’s new wave music and the indie music scene was the exact and direct reaction that opposed macho personas referring to big rock acts. Both the very alternative sound made in the United States and jangly genre in the United Kingdom represented these artists in a disgust, prejudices and false image manner. Just like the band Nelson and Poison.
As the 1980 era was about to end, big indie artist acted like recruiters for themselves and promoting themselves to big labels. Again, indie fans on the 80’s new wave music should take a pause and think about this before they judge one band to sell out because of their “commercialization”. This term was very much applied to the imitators of original sound for the sole purpose of making money.
